Put Students on the Path to Proficiency

Improving reading achievement means understanding what matters — and what works — in literacy instruction. Teaching practices rooted in the science of reading can transform student learning.

WHAT IT IS

A report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation finds that students with proficient literacy skills accomplish more throughout their life, including graduating high school, pursuing higher education, and obtaining meaningful work.

How can Istation help? Research from the National Reading Panel indicates there is a true science to reading instruction, based on five core elements known as the “Big Five” foundational essentials:

  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Phonics
  • Fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension

Istation incorporates these foundational elements into its programs in order to help students succeed in school and beyond.

WHY IT MATTERS

The goal of this approach — and the Istation platform — is to nurture reading skills and establish habits of learning.

With the help of Istation, schools get the support they need to improve comprehension and growth with activities and lessons that provide actionable and insightful data. It’s important for educators to infuse the science of reading into their reading instruction.

Istation Reading (assessment and instruction for pre-K through 8th grade) measures and instructs in skills most predictive of reading success.

Watch this on-demand webinar to learn how teaching practices rooted in the science of reading can impact student success.

“I feel like Istation allows me to have 10 other teachers in my classroom differentiating for each student’s need and instructing them,” says Deborah Gregory, Eagle County Schools Reading Specialist.

HOW ISTATION CAN HELP

Istation Reading includes a full library of tools and lesson plans aimed at addressing each phase of skill development. Students begin by mastering phonemic awareness through activities that teach them to identify, segment, and blend sounds. Next, they learn the letters of the alphabet and their sounds and become proficient in letter knowledge and decoding. After that, they move on to developing fluency with text and building reading comprehension. The final stage focuses on growing student vocabulary.
